THE OEV VIRTUAL HUB PROJECT
alicesdiner@gmail.com

The idea for the OEV Virtual Hub developed as a way to continue the work started by the Creative Community Roundtable (oev-ccrt.ca). The CCRT was developed by volunteers in the community as a way to keep the Old East Village informed and up to date on all the events, activities and projects taking place. However due to lack of money and people to take on the tasks of maintaining and promoting the CCRT, the project was too much work for one or two people to take on.

With a Job Creation Grant from the MTCU and the ability to hire several people we now have a means to support and continue the work that has already been done. Working with the original creators of the CCRT website and the OEVBIA, we are in the process of developing the OEV Virtual Hub which we hope to build over the next year into a central coordinating point for the Old East Village Culture & Food District.

With respect to the many changes and wonderful additions in the life of the neighbourhood and the way the community has developed over the past couple of years it was important that this virtual hub became more inclusive and collaborative to encompass a much wider definition of “culture”. This is the extended vision of the virtual hub which we hope you will support and help us build.

VISION:
The OEV Hub considers culture to be a “lived” and living part of the local fabric here in the OEV. Culture is about the people, the art, the food, the creativity, the history and heritage of a particular location. Culture to us includes: arts, crafts, music, food, sustainability, gardens, restaurants, destination shopping and more.

The OEV Hub is a central point of access to all events, artists, cultural happenings, food, places to stay, exhibitions, shows, performances, museums, theatres, concert halls, design, cultural teachers, arts, crafts and more taking place, living and teaching, exhibiting and performing in the OEV.

The OEV Hub works to promote the Old East Village as a destination spot for the people of London, tourists visiting from anywhere in Canada and those visiting London from their homes in the U.S., and the rest of the world.

The OEV Hub will continue to develop with the guidance and input of the OEV community and work collaboratively with the organizations and individuals that support the development of the OEV as a cultural centre.

Here are just a few of the potential categories that we hope to be listed on the site.

Hospitality links – connections to restaurants, hotels, B&B’s and accommodation for visitors;

Business links – connections to local businesses through the Old East BIA;

Heritage stories – stories and tales about the OEV throughout the past, present & future. We hope to encourage Heritage Walks & Tours by working collaboratively with organizations such as the Architectural Conservancy & the Heritage Council.

Linking to existing websites: working with the Arts & Heritage Councils to connect to Tourism London and the City’s Culture Office, working collaboratively so we don’t duplicate existing efforts and continue to build on existing collaborations and develop new ones.

  1. That is a wonderful idea! I start posting pictures on my Blog of London and the surrounding area to show visitors what they could discover. Maybe that is also interesting for you.
